GEOSAN awarded Tavan Tolgoi Airport management contract

GEOSAN has been contracted to manage full airport operations at Tavan Tolgoi, covering airside, ground handling, terminal and aeronavigation services.

Tavan Tolgoi Airport

About the contract

GEOSAN has been awarded a contract to manage the full operational scope of Tavan Tolgoi Airport, one of Mongolia's strategically important resource-sector airports serving the Tavan Tolgoi coal complex in South Gobi.

The contract covers airside operations, ground handling, terminal management, and aeronavigation services, bringing GEOSAN's full aviation capabilities to bear on one of the country's most operationally demanding airport environments.

Operational significance

Tavan Tolgoi Airport supports one of Asia's largest coal deposits and is a critical logistics link for the energy sector. Managing operations here places GEOSAN at the centre of Mongolia's resource export infrastructure.

The award reflects GEOSAN's two decades of experience operating in Mongolia's demanding remote and high-altitude environments, maintaining the strict standards required under Mongolian Civil Aviation Authority oversight.

New airborne instruments deployed in Tamil Nadu, India

GEOSAN's G-822A magnetometer and RSX-5 spectrometer completed their first international deployment, conducting surveys over Tamil Nadu with our own crew and aircraft.

Airborne survey over Tamil Nadu, India

First international deployment

In 2024, GEOSAN conducted airborne geophysical surveys over Tamil Nadu, India, marking the company's first deployment of its newly acquired Geometrics G-822A magnetometer and Radiation Solutions RSX-5 radiometric spectrometer on international soil.

The project was executed with GEOSAN's own crew and Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft, flying systematic survey lines over the target area to acquire high-resolution magnetic and radiometric data for the client's mineral exploration programme.

Survey objectives

The Tamil Nadu project was commissioned as part of a mineral exploration programme requiring detailed subsurface mapping across a large survey area. Airborne magnetic surveys map variations in rock magnetisation that indicate the presence of mineral deposits, structural geology, and lithological contacts. Radiometric surveys measure natural gamma radiation, characterising rock types at surface and near-surface depth.

Track record

GEOSAN has conducted airborne geophysical surveys since 2007, completing more than 70 projects across Mongolia. Previous international deployments include surveys in Myanmar, Laos, Inner Mongolia (China), and now India. Each project is acquired and processed by GEOSAN's in-house team, covering acquisition, quality control and data delivery.

Renewal confirmed

The Mongolian Civil Aviation Authority (MCAA) has renewed GEOSAN's Part 145 Maintenance Organisation Approval, affirming the company's continued authorisation to carry out scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on aircraft operated by GEOSAN and third-party operators.

The renewal follows a comprehensive audit of GEOSAN's maintenance facilities, quality management system, personnel qualifications and documentation procedures, conducted by MCAA inspectors.

Quality and safety standards

GEOSAN's maintenance organisation operates under a Quality Management System aligned with MCAA requirements. All maintenance personnel hold current MCAA licences for their respective categories and aircraft types. The organisation maintains detailed maintenance records, part traceability, and tool calibration documentation for all work carried out.

Fleet and capabilities

GEOSAN currently operates Cessna Grand Caravans configured for airborne survey work and passenger transport, and has recently added Airbus H145 helicopters to the fleet. The maintenance facility is equipped to support both fixed-wing and rotary-wing maintenance requirements in-house, reducing turnaround time and keeping operational availability high.
